How accessible is the school?

HLC is fully accessible for students who have wheelchairs; there are lifts which travel to each floor; doorways and corridors are all fully supportive of wheelchairs. There are accessible parking spaces for parents who wish to deliver their children and wheelchairs to the school. There is a full complement of toilets and changing facilities that support students in wheelchairs.
We have height adjustable tables and chairs available for those who need to use them.
We endeavour to adapt the environment for individual student’s visual and hearing requirements by using assistive technology that benefits and aids them.
We make information accessible to all by using supporting visuals and headline captions in different font sizes and other languages as required.
For our EAL students and families we have staff who can communicate in a number of languages and will always endeavour to conduct meetings in the language of the family’s choice.
Teaching and Learning

How will the school know about my child’s Special Educational Needs?

At Hadley Learning Community children are identified as having SEND in a variety of ways including the following:-

  • Liaison with any previous placement
  • If your child is performing below age expected levels
  • If you raise a concern
  • If a teacher raises a concern, for example if your child’s behaviour or self-esteem is affecting performance

  • If we have a health diagnosis

All students are assessed using a standardised reading test and spelling test in the first two weeks of year 7. Students identified from this testing will be assessed using the LUCID dyslexia screener.

We test the students in the same period using the Cognitive Abilities Tests. The CAT results are a lot less dependent upon a student’s classroom and learning experiences than the end-of-Key-Stage tests. CAT scores can provide us with a measure of your child’s ability largely independent of which school he or she went to, and what experiences he or she had there.

How will I let you know if I have worries or concerns?

  • Talk to us – firstly contact your child’s Student Support Manager or the Director of Specialist Provision (Loren Reeve). If your child is statemented you can also contact their Key worker.
  • It is important to us that you feel that you can communicate with us. We shall listen to your concerns and involve you in finding the best way forward.

How will Hadley Learning Community support my child?

Who will oversee, plan, work with my child and how often?

  • Our Director for Specialist Provision oversees the support and progress of any child requiring additional support across the school.
  • The class teacher will oversee, plan and work with each child with SEND in their class to ensure that progress in every area is made.
  • There is a Teaching Assistant in classes where students need extra support and whose work is directed by the class teacher.
  • We have a Key stage 3 Intervention Service, called the Skills Development Service where students who need extra work on basic skills such as numeracy and literacy; social skills and personal care are offered short intensive sessions.
  • We have a Key stage 4 intervention service run by staff in the Achievement Centre who support a catch up provision.
  • We have a Nurture room, called Rainbows, which offers courses and support for children who need extra care and encouragement in their development.
  • We have an hour at the end of the day, called session 6, where children can access further support in various curriculum areas.
  • We work alongside any outside agencies who are working with your child.

What additional support can be provided in the classroom?

  • Additional support is provided in the classroom by Teaching Assistants, who are subject specialists, as well as assistive technology such as laptops; tablets; Dictaphones with voice recognition software. We would like you to come and talk to the Director of Specialist Provision to discuss any support that you feel would benefit your child.

How will the curriculum be changed to suit to my child’s needs?

  • All work within class is delivered at the appropriate level and personalised so that all children can access a lesson and learn at their pace and level.
  • This will be supported by the TAs under the direction of the class teacher. We will use assistive technology too to promote personalised and independent learning.

How will this be explained to me?

  • The class teacher will meet with you at Parent’s evening to discuss your child’s needs, support and progress.
  • You can make an appointment to see the class teacher or the Director of Specialist Provision whenever you feel it is necessary to.
  • Our Director of Specialist provision will meet with you to give ideas of how to support at home and to discuss the support in more detail if you’d like to.
  • There are also two consultation days each year, where you will meet your child’s tutor and discuss progress.

What part do the Governors play and what are their responsibilities?

  • Our Director of Specialist Provision reports to the Governors to inform them about the progress of children with SEND and interventions and processes that are in place. The report talks
    about general principles and not individual students.
  • We have a governor who is responsible for SEND and she will meet regularly with the Director of Specialist Provision. She then informs the whole Governing Body of the SEND provision.
  • The Governors agree that the overall objective is that each child receives the support needed in order to make progress.

What provision do you offer to facilitate access to the curriculum and to develop independent learning?

We offer a programme of literacy based intervention as well as numeracy; behaviour and care through our Skills Development Service which is led by a team of specialist Teaching Assistants overseen by the Director of Specialist Provision. Literacy intervention is also available through the classroom experience and delivered by the class teacher.

We offer appropriate assistive technology, such as Dictaphones with voice recognition software or laptops to assist identified students with handwriting and recording difficulties. We will consult with all the necessary outside agencies to advise and support across the range of SEND.

What SEN and disability and awareness training is available to all staff?

Each teaching and non-teaching member of staff is given relevant training through the school year. Specialist nurses and agencies are able to provide advice and strategies for teaching students with SEND and medical conditions. We also have specialists in house who provide training on a regular basis.
