Welcome to Our Foundation Stage Unit
We have a well-staffed unit comprising of four teachers, six teaching assistants and regular support from bilingual staff.
We aim to make coming to school a happy and positive experience for each individual child. We do this by providing a safe, secure, happy and stimulating environment which can be accessed by all the children in our unit. Every child is unique and we build strong parent partnerships to help develop children confidence, and positive learning attitudes.
In our Foundation Unit children learn through meaningful play and first hand experiences both outdoors and indoors. As a school we believe that play is the most effective way young children learn. Our teachers work closely together to plan an engaging, flexible, exciting and differentiated curriculum that follows the interests and meets the needs of all of our wonderful children. Through child initiated, adult led, whole class, group and individual work, children are encouraged to explore and build upon their own learning. Through careful observation, discussion and questioning we challenge children to achieve their full potential. In our meeting we also track all our children which enable us to give the children the opportunity to experience a variety of engaging and purposeful activities.
The Foundation Unit provides part time place for children from the term after their 3rd birthday; we offer full time places to children from the beginning of the Academic year in which they are five. Nursery children can either have a morning session or an afternoon session place. The sessions last three hours each and the expectation is that children attend all five sessions in a week.
Morning Session 8.25 — 11.25am
Afternoon Session 12.00 —- 3.00pm

In our Foundation Stage our children also take part in these focused learning times:
Phonics is an important part of our curriculum. The children work in groups across the year groups and continue to learn new ‘letters and sounds’ to apply to their reading and writing. The short 20 minute sessions are interactive and challenging. We then encourage the children to show us their understanding in the other areas of the curriculum. In Nursery this is a daily 5 minute session that supports children to hear sounds around them and begin to link letters to the sounds they make.
Numbers and Patterns
Numbers and Patterns are short focussed sessions that run daily in Reception. These sessions focus on numbers and number patterns. The children are grouped across the year group to ensure appropriate challenge for all.
The children and adults really enjoy these sessions, whatever the weather! During these sessions the children demonstrate to us how they work co-operatively and independently within the outdoor environment. We cover all areas of the curriculum, including ‘bug hunting’ in Science, ‘measuring and counting’ in maths and ‘use of vocabulary’ in Literacy. The garden area that we use changes throughout the different seasons, so there is always plenty of new things to see and do.
Focus Teach are short focussed sessions that run daily in Reception and Nursery. These focus sessions are engaging and fun for the children and allow them to apply a range of skills in learning.
