Year 1 Curriculum Introduction
At HLC, the children learn through an exciting and engaging curriculum that aims to foster and nurture a love of learning. We offer all pupils a broad and balanced curriculum; providing opportunities for each child to develop their own independent learning strategies and making their learning meaningful and memorable.
In Year 1, the children will be continuing to learn through play-based activities, building on from their Foundation year. They begin by going on a tour around Telford, visiting the town park, before going over to Cosford to look at the range of aircraft. Planes suspended from the roof appear huge to a 5 or 6-year-old; this, along with opportunity to engage in real-life simulations, make it a very memorable experience. Our pupils venture through enchanted woods, before shooting off into Space. The children investigate a space craft crash site and learn all about the first man on the Moon. They spend the Summer term with animals, both at the zoo and down in the rainforest.
One of the many highlights of the year is the Grandparents tea party that they host, where they invite their family members in to play games from the past with them – no technology in sight in this session!
Our key reading texts this year are – The Wrekin Giant by Dave Weston, Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis, Field Trip to the Moon by John Hare, Old Bear stories by Jane Hissey, Monkey Puzzle by Julia Donaldson and The Tiger Who Came To Tea by Judith Kerr.
Throughout the topics, the children engage in stimulating STEM activities which include including making their own animal habitat and bird feeder. They also design and make a toy to play with their friends and families.
Children at HLC participate in a Year 1 Christmas production. This year group will also visit the theatre to watch a pantomime, get the opportunity to work in the ECO garden at DENSO and experience wandering with Wild Deer at Attingham Park.
