Year 5 Curriculum Introduction
Here at HLC the children learn through an exciting and engaging curriculum that aims to foster and nurture a love of learning. We offer all pupils a broad and balanced curriculum: providing opportunities for each child to develop their own independent learning strategies and making their learning meaningful and memorable.
In Year 5 the children will be learning through a range of topics, taking them across and out of this world. They begin their journey by investigating unsolved mysteries before blasting off into space. They learn to Walk Like an Egyptian, travel on a Great American Road Trip before exploring the Secret Garden. Finally, they sail across the Whale Road to England alongside the Viking invaders.
Our key reading texts this term are: The Nowhere Emporium by Ross MacKenzie; The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge; The Secrets of the Sun King by Emma Carroll; Holes by Louis Sacher and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett to name a few. Throughout the topics, the children engage in stimulating STEM activities including building space kites for NASA and creating a filtration device to create clean water.
They participate in a Year 5 production during the Spring Term. Year 5 children will also have the opportunity to take part in the John Muir Award at HLC - learning how to connect, engage and protect the wildlife around them.
