Year 6 Curriculum Introduction
Here at HLC the children learn through an exciting and engaging curriculum that aims to foster and nurture a love of learning. We offer all pupils a broad and balanced curriculum: providing opportunities for each child to develop their own independent learning strategies and making their learning meaningful and memorable.
In Year 6 the children will be learning through a range of topics, taking them across the world and back in time. They start by taking cover in an Anderson Shelter before adventuring Under the Green Canopy. Next, they hop onto the fateful Titanic, reading real stories about the people on board whilst exploring Water, water, Everwhere. They battle with Macbeth, get lost in the Lands of the Mayans before taking an exciting ride, with lots of thrills and spills!
Our key reading texts this term are: When We Were Warriors, by Emma Carroll; The Explorer by Katherine Rundell; The Titanic Detective Agency by Lindsay Littleson; Macbeth by William Shakespeare and 13 Hours by Narinder Dhami to name a few. Throughout the topics, the children engage in stimulating STEM activities including building their own lifejacket from recycled materials and designing and creating a moving fairground ride.
They work towards their SATs in the summer term, then finish their year by taking part in the Y6 performance. The children in year 6 also have the opportunity to go away on a five day adventure residential in Wales, where they rock climb, gorge walk and explore the outdoors.
