The British Government defined its concept of ‘British Values’ in its 2011 Prevent Strategy, and since 2014 the Department for Education has required all schools to “promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs”.
Our School has a wonderfully diverse community and welcomes and values everyone, whatever their ability, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality or background. Currently we have children and families who originate from many different countries worldwide. As a commuity school, we believe we have a vital role in combating discrimination and promoting fairness, justice and equality through our teaching and in the role models we offer. We teach the children to be responsible citizens and positive representatives of the United Kingdom within the wider world. Promoting British Values is, therefore, an intrinsic part of all we do. We expect that these values and attitudes are modelled and promoted by all the staff, allowing children to see and hear these values in action every day.
At HLC we promote ‘British Values’ through our spiritual, moral, social and cultural education which is developed through all curriculum areas and in all aspects of school life.

Children are given opportunities to make their views known through the Student Parliament elections and surveys. We empower children by giving them opportunities to make choices about the things that they believe to be important. By valuing the opinion of each child and by listening and responding to them, we demonstrate that we support democracy and liberty. Children learn about democracy today and the implications for individuals when it is not present. Class and whole school assemblies are used as opportunities to look at current news both locally and globally.
Rule of Law:
At the beginning of each year, children in each class create their own class codes of behaviour; helping children to make decisions and choices that are acceptable to the school community. Children are supported by all staff and peers to learn to manage their behaviour and take responsibility for their actions. Staff provide a consistent environment within the school. We make it clear to children that there is a connection between actions and consequences. By creating this type of environment, we aim for children to feel safe and secure and so ensure the best conditions for learning to take place.
Our pupils are encouraged to become good and valued citizens. We achieve this by effective modelling and supporting each pupil to become as independent as possible. We endeavour to demonstrate that everyone has rights; this includes the right to say ‘No’ when appropriate. Some pupils will be able to take responsibility for particular roles in the classroom and across school eg class monitors, Sports leaders, Library leaders, E-Leaders, Safe Squad, and to understand that certain rights come with responsibilities. Learning to do things independently is an important part of learning to understand yourself. We support others by participating in local community and charitable events. We believe that by engendering a caring and helpful environment and by learning to be independent can boost and nurture a healthy self-esteem.
We promote each pupil’s inclusion, where possible, in a range of activities, settings and locations. The children across school have opportunities to integrate with other children in different year groups, both in learning sessions and breaktimes. We plan events for pupils to go into the community to meet with a range of people in a variety of situations which include: sports events and community events. It is important to facilitate opportunities for schools to be part of the local, national and global communities. Children, families and staff have much to offer in the development of community cohesion.
Acceptance of different faiths and beliefs:
At HLC we prepare children for a multi-faith Britain where each person is respected and valued equally without regard to ability, gender, faith, heritage or race. Cultural appreciation and development forms part of our curriculum. We place great emphasis on providing encounters and participation in events and celebrations to broaden all pupils’ experiences and awareness of others. Our Collective Worship teaches all pupils to find out about themselves and others, linking their lives to the communities in which they belong. Pupils are encouraged to experience British Culture through our curriculum and extra- curricular events. Schools take part in school and local sporting activities which help to instil ‘fair play’ and engender a ’team spirit’.
All staff work closely with parents, carers and other professionals to ensure that the pupils are happy, well cared for and enabled to learn the skills they need to live a fulfilling life as part of their local community and the wider Britain.
