At HLC English is taught every day from Nursery through to Year 6. Children are encouraged to develop an enthusiasm for writing and a love of reading through a varied range of experiences. In Early Years and Key Stage 1 a daily phonic session is used to support reading and writing. The children quickly learn the sounds that the letters make and are very proud of their progress and achievement.
In Key Stage 2 the majority of reading and writing is linked across the curriculum. Children do not have separate books for foundation subjects, this work is completed in their lined book and the writing is of the same standard as during their English lessons. Cross curricular work provides children with opportunities to apply the reading and writing skills they have been taught.
Children are assessed by their class teacher formally every half term. A copy of their assessment is shared with the children and they always know what they need to do next to improve their work. This information is shared with parents in their annual report and during consultation day. Please ask your child’s teacher if you would like any further information about your child’s assessments and targets.
