Welcome to the Year 1 and 2 Team!
We work as a team across both year groups, sharing assemblies and other events. Our Year 1 children have this year moved into brand new classrooms and they are enjoying acting as good role models for the younger pupils in nursery and reception.
We plan our curriculum activities to ensure they are similar within the school theme so that the children and staff can support one another.
The children find it a huge but exciting move from the Foundation Stage unit into the Year 1 classes, as they suddenly understand the size and feel more of a part of the Primary Phase. They love coming into school without their mums and dads in the morning and take great pleasure in the harder work they complete in class. They settle in quickly and it is lovely to see them walking around school independently, they always look very proud of themselves… and very grown up!
The curriculum changes from the Foundation Stage into Year 1, careful planning ensures that the children continue to have lots of opportunities to learn through practical activities. They apply their skills to their new learning confidently and enthusiastically. The children enjoy daily lessons in reading, writing, phonics and maths and work hard for their phonic screening check at the end of the year. Every day the children work across their year group in 20 minute phonics sessions, they work with lots of different adults during these sessions and are encouraged to apply their knowledge in their writing and reading.
The children in Year 2 are all eager to continue to make progress and they enjoy the challenge of the new learning and harder work. They are aware that they have their SAT’s towards the end of the year and are eager to do their very best.
Phonics is an important part of our curriculum. The children work in groups across the year groups and continue to learn new ‘letters and sounds’ to apply to their reading and writing. The short 20 minute sessions are interactive and challenging. We then expect the children to show us their understanding in the other areas of the curriculum.
Year 1 attend Forest School on Tuesday and Year 2 on Monday
The children and adults really enjoy these sessions, whatever the weather! During these sessions the children demonstrate to us how they work co-operatively and independently within the outdoor environment. We cover all areas of the curriculum, including ‘bug hunting’ in Science, ‘measuring and counting’ in maths and ‘use of vocabulary’ in Literacy. The garden area that we use changes throughout the different seasons, so there is always plenty of new things to see and do.
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
This is a statutory test that is completed in the Summer Term. The children work with their teacher to show their knowledge and understanding and application of their phonics. It is completed in a positive environment for all the children. Results are reported to parents in July.
End of KS1 Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs)
The children in Year 2 are assessed in Maths, Reading and Writing during the Summer Term. This is done in the classrooms and is a supportive environment for all children. We invite parents and carers into school to give more information about the process and ways to support the children at the beginning of the Summer Term.
We all believe that your child’s education is a very important ‘Learning Journey’ in which we as teachers and you as parents can contribute to and support. It is important to us that you feel part of our school and community and we value your input.
